Meditation Tips for Beginners

By Erika Cheng

Meditation is an accessible practice that allows you to connect with your mind and body. There are many variations of meditation which focus on different aspects of wellness, mindfulness, and reflection. No matter which method you choose, incorporating meditation into your daily routine is a great way to step back when things are getting a little hectic or when you just want to refresh your mind.

Studies have shown that meditating every day for 15 minutes can help you reduce stress, enhance self awareness, and can be done pretty much anywhere. Here are some tips for your next meditation session!

Practice clearing your mind and winding down before starting your session

This is especially important if you are meditating after a stressful meeting or a hard day in general. Doing this can also help keep your mind focused on meditation rather than letting your mind wander, especially towards things that have caused you stress.

Find the best position for you

If you feel uncomfortable during your session, your mind will not be fully immersed in the meditation because you will be thinking about your uncomfortable posture. Find ways in which you can sit up naturally, and use pillows or other surfaces to be able to sit comfortably.

The ideal position for most people is not sitting on the floor with crossed legs, but rather on some sort of chair, with legs uncrossed and feet planted firmly on the ground.

Acknowledge all emotions after your session

Because meditation is partly about reflection, it is normal to feel happy after a session, but it is also perfectly normal to feel down. You will likely experience many emotions during your meditation journey, and it is important to acknowledge all of them and know that it is okay to feel this way!

Try using meditation apps

Calm is a popular meditation app that is very beginner friendly. The app provides guided sessions that range anywhere from 3 to 25 minutes long which can be chosen based on what you want to focus on during your meditation. Insight Timer is also popular, with expert teachers and a tracker that allows you to chart progress and earn badges.
